A glimmer of hope for Jani Chathurangi

By Namal Pathirage

The Jani Thathurangi episode has now taken another u-turn. Now her situation has turned from a real hopeless one to a there-is-some-hope situation.

Upon her finishing of the women’s 4x400metre event on August 25 2006, her urine sample read that it contained 32% of “Thandralone” – a banned performance enhancement drug. But within 24 hours when she took part in the women’s 100metres event on August 26th the ‘Thandralone” count read only a minimal 10%.

According to people in the know this is an unacceptable situation. This includes Dr. A.R.M. Jayasekera a very knowledgeable person in this sphere of activity. It was he who was involved in the case which disproved similar charges which were brought against Jani’s senior sprinter Susanthika Jayasinghe some years ago. A research done by him has shown that the banned substance has entered her blood stream, but, it has come through the drugs that she used as medication for her abnormal monthly menstruation cycle. But he is convinced that the difference of the first two readings is highly unacceptable and an error has occurred in the process of the reading.

Her situation has become more interesting as the two feuding parties at the AAA are trying to prove a point. Now Jani’s original coach Derwin Perera who is also the president of the AAA has disowned her, but the persons of the opposition have taken up the case and are busy championing her cause.

Jani’s case will be taken up once again on the 17th of this month.
