The up-country Tamils have joined the government placing their trust in President Rajapaksa. Time and again the LTTE has proved itself to be anti-Muslim, all out to annihilate the Muslim community. The Eastern Tamils are rallying round the Karuna group. So whom is the LTTE representing?

That is the million dollar question.

Millions and millions of dollars are pumped into LTTE coffers by a minority group of Jaffna Tamil expatriates who live in the lap of luxury in Western countries. Their children are studying in leading Universities of the world. They pump money to the LTTE for the poor innocent child recruits of Wanni to fight a futile war and die. The thinking is let other people’s children fight the war and not my children as evidenced by Prabhakaran himself who sent his children to study in foreign countries.

So ultimately it boils down to the fact that the LTTE is representing only the minority group of Jaffna Tamils which is less than 5% of the total population as large numbers of this group have migrated to foreign climes. There goes the canard that the LTTE is the sole representative of the Tamil speaking people.

The international community and co-chairs should take note of this situation. Any peace talks in the future must include the representatives of upcountry Tamils, the Muslim community and the Karuna group. Otherwise justice will not be done to these minority groups. No group or organization should be allowed to hold a nation to ransom using their armed might.
