New look for fuel sheds

The government is to spend Rs. 1,000 million to refurbish 107 fuel stations islandwide, Petroleum Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie told The Sunday Times.

Mr. Fowzie said the filling stations owned by the Finance Ministry were in bad condition and needed to be restored to stay competitive with the other outlets.

“The LIOC and CPSTL sheds are in remarkable condition and we feel that sheds owned by the Finance Ministry too should keep up with them,” he said.

The Minister said the renovation was scheduled to begin within a month.

Mr. Fowzie also said that while the government was trying to recover from its total loss of more than nine billion rupees due to selling fuel at a subsidized rate, it had still reduced fuel prices to ensure that consumers benefited from the failing world market prices.
