Umpires Cricket Sevens today

Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga will be the chief guest at the first ever umpires Seven-a-side championships to be held today at the Mahara prison ground.

Umpires teams from Kandy, Colombo, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Kalutara and host Gampaha will contest for supremacy.

The Gampaha branch of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers say they have lined up handsome prizes for the winners, runners-up and individual players who excel in the championship.

“It will be a great get together, more than a cricket tournament for most of the umpires since they meet very rarely to discuss their views on the game of cricket and when the opportunity was provided they seized it with both hands”, chief organiser L.H. Sunil said.

The event will get underway at 9.00 a.m. with a colourful opening ceremony.

Live bands will also be in attendance at the championship.
