17th Amendment: Will deadlock be broken?

The Parliamentary select committee appointed look into shortcomings in the 17th Amendment to the Constitution will be headed by Constitutional Affairs Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera.

The Committee was set up as a result of the deadlock in the appointment of a single member to the Constitutional Council (CC) which has delayed the functioning of the Council for more than a year.

The Committee has to report in a month on how to overcome the shortcomings in the law as well as how to resolve the problem regarding the appointment of the lone member to the CC.

The delay in making the appointment has jeopardised the workings of all other independent commissions as well.
