'Super Size Me':Danger of Fast Food

This week's ‘Tuesday movie’ at the American centre-Colombo would discuss with the issue why are Americans so fat? Two words: 'Fast Food'. Beautiful depiction and startling and undeniably entertaining film by Morgan Spurlock's 'Super Size Me' captures the attention of worldwide filmgoers as few documentaries can.

Starring Morgan Spurlock, Daryl Isaacs, Lisa Ganjhu, Stephen Siegel and Bridget Bennett, Eric Rowley in the major roles on a mission to understand the world's abusive relationship with fast food by becoming a fast food junkie - eating only McDonalds meals for an entire month.

The United States, as we all know, is a nation chock-full of chubsters. It's virtually impossible to walk down any American street nowadays without encountering triple-chinned doughboys, wobbling along the sidewalk, sweating liquid cheese and sniffing the air for the sweet scent of their next intake of calorie-packed nosh. But who's to blame for turning the Land of the Free into the Land of the Fries? Little-known documentarist Morgan Spurlock reckons he has the answer - and, in the bizarre 'Super Size Me', he sets out to prove it.

For a period of 30 days, Morgan lived off nothing but fast food from McDonalds. He had to munch down three meals a day (no excuses), wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything not sold underneath the golden arches, and couldn't change the rest of his lifestyle in any way. Interspersed with talking head on interviews with top dieticians, docs and nutritionalists, this is his video diary.

Big Macs and Chicken Nuggets will never look or taste same after watching this American independent sensation. "Super Size Me" is a movie that sheds a new light on what has become one of our nation's biggest health problems: obesity.

The film screening will start promptly at 6.30 pm on August 29, 2006 at the American Centre, Galle Road, Colombo-3.
