‘Anjalika’ : A copy of Bollywood

A review by Ranjith Bandara Attanayake

Tele Drama actor turned film director Channa Perera's maiden cinematic creation 'Anjalika' is a film which has a climax that takes different turns moment by moment in a way spectators never expected.

This constructive Quality of his film glares specially at the end of the story
Anjalika and Thiwanka were lovers. That affair reminded us of an yesteryear film. Fiancé was very rich. Fiancée was very poor. The director has added some beautiful landscapes and dances we see mostly in bollywood films. The producer would have influenced Channa to give Anjalika a Hindi movie outlook.

Apart from that Anjalika ends in a similar manner that of an old Hindi or Tamil film. Such old movies end either as a tragedy or in a happy ending. The only novelty I saw was the different facets in the climax.

But Channa has shown his creative capabilities by building Eardley's (Thiwanka's uncle) character very discreetly. In such a manner that spectators always suspect Eardley. Their suspicion solely directs towards Eardley, not on Clifford (Thiwanka's father) who was the real Culprit, the one who was responsible for the disappearance and alleged murder of Anjalika. By this cinematic trick Channa has made the spectators surprised until clifford reveals that, that was one of his conspiracies.

It was not clear whether Anjalika disguised as Uththara in Malaysia was really married. If that was the situation how did Anjalika or Uththara manage to come to Sri Lanka alone?.

It's very very rare that Thiwanka meets Anjalika / Uththara again and again whenever he comes to a certain restaurant in a big city like Malaysia. Suppose it was by chance!

Will Anjalika / Uththara dares to give Thiwanka a slap?. Can we expect such a reaction specially from a young woman who wants to be in obscurity from society?.
