Probe on NGOs: All District Secs to answer

All District Secretaries have been asked to appear before the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the operations of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on Thursday, Committee Chairman JVP MP Vijitha Herath said.

They have been summoned to obtain details of the operations of NGOs in their respective areas as well as to find out how informed they were of the workings of these organizations, he said.

The committee which is probing the role of NGOs operating in the country is hoping to present an interim report to Parliament by October.


Short-lived heist: Two caught with gold jewellery haul, three escape

After a hectic car chase and gunfight, police caught two robbers while three others got away fleeing the scene of a jewellery shop burglary in Kohuwala on Friday.

Kohuwala Police Station OIC B.S. Tissera told The Sunday Times that five robbers entered ‘Mallika Hemachandra Jewellers’ outlet in Kohuwala at 6 p.m. on Friday and robbed an estimated 15 million rupees worth of gold jewellery.

“One of our traffic cops in the area reported the robbery and a police vehicle gave chase immediately. There were gunshots fired by both parties and two robbers were shot and injured, so they were forced to stop the vehicle,” he said. He said three of them escaped while the two injured robbers were immediately rushed to the Kalubowila hospital.

The police have already begun investigations to trace the three robbers who escaped, he said.

OIC Tissera also added that a knife, a firearm and a bomb were found in the vehicle along with the stolen jewellery and cash Rs. 300,000. The vehicle was reported to be rented but the number plates had been changed by the robbers.

DIG K.P. Pathirana and SSP W. Abeynayake are also handling the case and currently trying to locate the whereabouts of the three fugitives.
