‘Dharma Puthra’ on the screen

'Dharma Puthra', an action movie directed by Louis Vanderstraaten, is now being released at MPI circuit cinemas around the country.

Depicting a young man's journey to bring back a Buddha statue which is said to have miraculous powers and which was stolen by the antique thieves, the film was produced by Nimal Sumanasekara.

The cast includes Vasantha Kumaravila, Anusha Dhamayanthi, Buddhika Rambukwella, Nimal Sumanasekara,, Dayananda Jayawardena, Raja Fernando, Vimal Jayakody, Janaki de Silva, Aravinda Irugalbandara and Hemantha Rathnakumara.

In a far off poor Sinhala village, a Buddha statue believed to have miraculous powers is stolen one day by a young man named Tony who visits the village regularly to find anything of antique value.

After the loss of the Buddha statue, the villagers think that they would have to face a lot of hardships and incurable diseases owing to the loss of the statue.

Meanwhile a young man 'Dharma' who was brought up by the Chief Priest of the village temple, volunteers to go to the city in search of the stolen statue.

Dharma meets Vipula, another young man from the same village who has come to the city hoping to find riches and a better life and instead gets involved in drugs and gambling. Vipula and another girl Maduri helps Dharma to find the Statue.

The film which was first titled as 'Budhdha Puthra' was changed on the intervention of the National Film Corporation. Having been passed by the Public Performances Board the films title was changed.

Camera handled by Denesh Kumar, edited by M. S. Aliman, art director Rohana Kumara and Leon Vanestraaten assisted in direction. H. M. Jayawardena and Asoka Peiris composed music for the songs while background music was handled by Charaka Madusanka.
