Maldives students at Kelaniya campus

A batch of 28 students from the Maldives will be the first to follow a new diploma course for social workers starting tomorrow, conducted by the Kelaniya University.

These students have been awarded scholarships by UNICEF and the British Council in the Maldives to follow the course and once their training is completed, they will be employed in the Government sector in that country, Education Ministry Media Consultant Premasara Epasinghe said.

The Ministry for Gender and Family in the Maldives has decided to expand its services with the increase in the level of social problems there in recent years. The course will be inaugurated by Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.

Underskirt covers foreign female’s folly

By Shane Seneviratne

A scantily clad foreign female’s presence at the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy caused a furore when she was spotted by journalists. This prompted a local female accompanying her to remove and offer her underskirt to the foreigner to cover herself.

The foreigner was reportedly in the company of a senior Maligawa officer and had entered through the VIP entrance.

Adding insult to injury, the local woman had removed her underskirt at the Hevisi Mandapaya of the Maligawa. However, their attempts to approach the Tooth Relic were thwarted.
