Blood
donation campaign
There is an urgent need for blood. All who are
in the age group 18 – 60 and weighing over 50 kg are eligible
to donate blood every four months. A blood donation campaign is
being organised by the Lions Club of Oruwela and the Shrama Shakthi
Organisation, together with the Police. This campaign will be conducted
on July 27 at ‘Life Plus’ Hospital, No. 259, Pannipitiya
Road, Pelawatte Junction, Battaramulla, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The
organisers appeal for volunteers to donate a pint of blood, which
could save a life.

– Mahajana College, Old Students’ Association, Colombo

Fire on ice from LC’s OGA
The Ladies’ College Old Girls’ Association
dinner-dance, ‘Fire on Ice’, will be held at the Waters
Edge on July 29. Bands Gypsies and Misty will be in attendance.
The dance is being held after eight years.
Memorial oration at Musaeus
Visakha Tillekeratne joins a long list of distinguished
past students of Musaeus College to deliver this year’s Marie
Musaeus Higgins – Peter de Abrew Memorial Oration 2006 on
July 28 at the college auditorium. The topic of her lecture will
be ‘Spirit of Marie Musaeus Higgins in Public Services’.
Visakha, presently a Programme Officer at the
United Nations World Food Programme, is a graduate in chemistry
with a Master of Science in Food Technology in Developing Countries
from King’s College, University of London. She obtained the
Berridge Bursary Trust Award, while pursuing her Master’s
degree. She also obtained a scholarship and followed PhD studies
at Imperial College, University of London on the bio-chemistry of
sorghum.
Competitions for World Children’s
Day
To commemorate World Children’s Day on October
1, 2006, the Centre for the Study of Human Rights, University of
Colombo, together with the Equal Access to Justice of the United
Nations Development Programme has organised an island-wide short
story and poster competition. Students may participate in Sinhala,
Tamil or English medium. Winners will receive prizes and certificates.
Selected short stories and posters will be published.

by registered post or hand them in on or before August 15. For more

Ahasing Watunu Minissu at the Lumbini
R. R. Samarakoon’s Ahasing Watunu Minissu,
which won four Awards at the Drama festival in 1971, will go on
the boards at 7.00 p.m. at the Lumbini Theatre on July 27.
The play will also be staged on July 28 at Bandarawela,
July 30 at Borella, August 18 at Kurunegala and on August 27 at
Bandaragama. The cast includes Thilak Kumara Ratnayake, Ramya Wanigasekera,
Geetha Kanthy Jayakody, Wickrema Seneviratne and Ravindra Ariyarathne.
