A garden

A garden is a place full of play,
A place to be happy and gay.
It is a place of trees,
A place full of peace.
A place where people rest,
And birds make their nest.
It has many rides,
Such as swings and slides.
A place which has beautiful scenery,
A place full of greenery.

My favourite hobby

My favourite hobby is collecting stamps. I have more than one hundred stamps. I have both foreign and local stamps. There are one hundred and eight local stamps and fifty eight foreign stamps in my collection.

There are stamps from Australia, India, Pakistan, Africa, Helvetia, Canada, Japan and Malaysia in my collection. The most interesting foreign stamp is the Queen's stamp from England. Among local stamps, there are ancient heroes of Sri Lanka, the presidents and prime ministers who governed our country and stamps with beautiful scenery.

The most attractive stamp is the Dalada Maligawa. Out of all my favourite stamps is the Abhayagiria Dagaba. My father helps me to find most of the stamps. I like to increase my collection, as I love my hobby.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a small village about 10 miles away from Dambulla in the district of Matale. Visitors go there very often to climb its huge rock of ancient fame; and see the beautiful paintings on parts of its walls; as well as the interesting ruins found there.

This rock is very steep and about 600 feet in height. It was the fortress of a king in Ceylon who built a city around it and ruled it for eighteen years. This is one of the most beautiful wonders of Sri Lanka.

My trip to Kandy

I went on a trip to Kandy during my last holidays. I went with my parents, uncles, aunts and cousins. We went in an air-conditioned bus. We started our journey at 5.30am.

We packed our breakfast with chickpeas, tea and sandwiches. We took cool water. We were singing songs till we reached the Pinnawela elephant orphanage.

There were two places in the orphanage. One is the resting place and the other one is the bathing place. At about 10 o'clock the elephants were taken to bath in the river. They walked in a row holding their tails to each other. There were lots of elephant dung along the road.

After that we started our journey to the Peradeniya Botanical Garden. There were lots of trees in the garden. We found different kinds of grass and herbs in the garden. The orchid house was so beautiful with different kinds of orchids, we had our lunch in the garden. I played with my cousins and ran on the green grass.

Then we got into the bus. We reached the Dalada Maligawa at about 3.30pm. We saw the statue of Raja the elephant, which was taken to the Perahera. There were lots of ancient monuments, drawings, wood carvings and the golden roof in Dalada Maligawa.

One of our relatives living in Kandy took us to a dam. It was so beautiful to see. He invited us to his house and we had hot cups of tea and short-eats. Now we got into the bus and we were very tired and sleepy and came home at 10.30pm. It was an enjoyable for for me and my family members.

A Poem for the Week - 'The Web'

Lazily fiddling with my
pencil
I glanced at the heap of books
Which are filled with
homework;
The reason mother gives black looks.

Fiddling and wasting
precious time,
I have wasted one whole hour
Something just caught my eye,
A spider climbing the tower.

Swiftly, it scurried upwards
And wove itself down again
Weaving a web up the tower
Hard working; but showing no pain.

Its speed was awe-inspiring
Its strength, I can't speak of
Its web, it finished weaving
Its beauty, I had seen.

As I glanced at my watch
Remembering I wasted an hour
What this creature had done in five minutes
Is build a fine web up that tower.
