No polls in LTTE areas
Doubts over Govt-controlled areas also
Local Government elections in LTTE-dominated areas are likely to be postponed. The Sunday Times learns that a formal announcement of the postonement is to be made shortly by Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake.

The reason for this postponement is the inability of government officials to make arrangements for the polls in the LTTE-controlled areas.
Distict Secretaries of the Northern and Eastern provinces yesterday met the Commissioner at the Elections Secretariat at Rajagriya to discuss matters relating to the polls.

District Secretaries of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Batticaloa, Vavuniya and Mannar explained to the commissioner difficulties in conducting the polls in the LTTE controlled-areas as well as in some government controlled areas.

According to some of the District Secretaries who attended yesterday’s conference, conducting polls in some of the cleared areas as well was difficult as they are located in High Security zones.

They pointed out that some of the parties and candidates had not been able to campaign freely. The commissioner directed the District Secretaries in the Northern and Eastern provinces to go ahead with the arrangements to hold the elections in the cleared areas.

The Commissioner, however, said he would further study the ground situation and take a decision soon on holding elections in some security-forces-controlled areas.

On Friday the commissioner consulted security forces representatives and Police Chief Chandra Fernando about security arrangements for the polls including that of the north and east.

In a related development the LTTE has summoned Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs to Kilinochchi today to discuss the local polls, among other issues.

The TNA had earlier requested President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Commissioner of Elections to postpone the polls, citing the security situation.
The TNA warned that any violence before the polls could affect the next round of peace talks in Geneva.
