Upul seeks BASL post
A former Bar Association (BASL) Secretary Upul Jayasuriya will be contesting for the Deputy President’s post prior to the convocation of the legal body next Saturday.

Mr. Jayasuriya, with more than 30 years at the Bar, with a stint at the Attorney General's Department, has been BASL Secretary from 1989–91 when Ranjith Abeyasuriya, P.C was the President.

Mr. Jayasuriya has been involved in several Fundamanetal Rights cases, and was a forceful voice in the Bar Council, the BASL's governing body since 1976.“The Bar Association must serve as a watch dog of judicial independence like some of the international Bar Associations”, he said confirming his candidature.

Recently, Mr. Jayasuriya together with outgoing BASL President Desmond Fernando, P.C. was responsible for inviting the President of the International Bar Association (IBA) Francis Neat to Sri Lanka to obtain IBA support for tsunami affected lawyers.
