More killings in the north and east
Two unidentified gunmen shot dead the Thirukkovil Divisional Secretary A.K Thavarajah on Friday evening while an army officer and two soldiers were killed in Chavakachcheri by a fellow soldier in a dispute over home leave yesterday. Mr. Thavarajah was on his way home from office on a motorcycle when the two gunmen shot him four times at close range.

The divisional secretary had figured in a controversy after he had hung a portrait of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. Meanwhile the Government yesterday condemned the killing of Mr. Thavarajah.

It said the targeting of Government officials who were going about their official business threatened the functioning of Government institutions in an area where the maintenance of the Ceasefire Agreement was a high priority and the urgent work connected with post-tsunami relief and reconstruction was an immediate need. "Clearly, those who are behind this killing do not respect these two objectives," it said.

In Chavakachcheri, a major and two lance corporals were shot dead by a soldier inside the camp after an argument over leave for the New Year holidays. The tragedy took place at the Seventh Sinha Regiment camp at Chavakachcheri.

The victims were identified as Major Sanjeeva Rathnaweera, Lance Corporal P.K.G Abeysinghe and Lance Corporal A.R.L Prema Kumara. The soldier was handed over to the Chavakachcheri police with his T 56 weapon.
