More spark for CH rugby
L.G. Abans, who has gained intentional recognition for sponsoring sports worldwide, with major events like the last World Cup (Cricket) has joined the scrum for the first time in Sri Lanka. They will be sponsoring the Maitland Crescent Club's rugby in the ongoing Premier League.

CH has already made an impact this sason by performing reasonably well with a young outfit (virtually Under-24) with an eye for the future. This was revealed in a media confab held at their clubhouse last Wednesday (June 25) by former Sri Lanka player Rohan Abeykoon before they signed the sponsorship package with Abans. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Gymkhana Club, Iqbal Hassan, in association with Ananda Cooray and Channa Pathirana (General Manager) and Brand Manager Buddhika Dharmawardena of Abans Ltd.

Abeykoon said, this package will add more power to the team. They are bound to be in the finish of the Premier league. Without sponsorship no sport could progress at the national level. It will not only help the young players in the club, but in turn to help the country to prepare for the year 2006 Asiad to be staged here. Most of the players in the side will still be in the scrum by that time, Rohan observed. "With a long term programme, we will help the Rugby Union in their endeavour to gain the third spot at the Asiad", he said.

He thanked Abans for giving CH that much-needed muscle. Rohan made special mention of Ranjan Canagasabey, Chairman of the Rugby Committee who has a big hand in this great happening.

Channa Pathirana said this was the first time Abans has come forward to boost rugby in the country by helping with a sponsorship package. Abans firmly believe, via sports that they could bring about a reconcilliation. Abans has helped the sponge racket sport (Table Tennis) where the Pestonjees have made a name both at school and at club level. - BW

Samantha helps cricket fans
The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation was able to give live radio commentary on the one-day series between Sri Lanka and West Indies in the ongoing tour in the Caribbean, thanks to a fine gesture afforded to them by Samantha Algama's latest satellite technology.

Algama, an ardent cricket supporter, played for St. Joseph's College and later captained the Wattala Antonians. There was a complete blackout in the 1996 cricket tour of the West Indies which team was captained by Arjuna Ranatunga.

During that tour too Algama helped the S.L.B.C. when Rupavahini failed to telecast the matches 'live', according to him. But Samantha was able to help them with his visuals (obtained through the latest satellite technology) to give telecasts in their news programmes.

He has been on call even for the year 2001 Asian Test Cricket Championship in Lahore where Kumar Sangakkara, made a stroke-filled 233. The SLBC commentators were at Algama's residence to give this commentary.

Algama said, that he was prepared to lend the video cassette of Upul Chandana's 89 - run knock made in 72 balls for any fan who wanted to see it. It was made in the recent one-dayer against the Windies. and helped Sri Lanka to win the second match to win the series 2-0. - BW
