Diyawanna claims two
Police yesterday renewed a warning that the Diyawanna Oya around parliament is not safe for bathing following two more drownings in recent days.
Police said two people were drowned on Tuesday and Friday and they were warning the people to avoid bathing at this spot which was a popular area for evening gatherings. A warning sign had been posted earlier, but it had been removed.

Ministry goes to people
The Ministry of Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government is to appoint a team of persons to evaluate public centred work being carried out by institutions under the Ministry.

Minister Alick Aluvihare has decided to appoint three persons each from every Pradeshiya Sabha Division to carry out this work.

The pilot project is to be carried out in the Matale District and is expected to be implemented soon.

Balagalle stays on
The term of Lt Gen. Lionel Balagalle has been extended until September 30.
His term had been due to expire on June 14. The Sunday Times on June 9 exclusively reported that he would be given an extended term as the Commander of the Army.
