'Surrealism': a story through the lens

By Dilhani Thanthirimudalige
Destry Muller, an up and coming photo-artist, will hold his first photographic exhibition from February 2 to 10, 2001, at the Alliance Francaise in Kandy.

The theme of this exhibition is "Surrealism" the first of its kind to be held in Sri Lanka.

Destry has focused his camera on the sub-conscious mind of man. This kind of Surrealism is only seen in abstract pictures of painters. Surrealism is a collection of pictures of the mind. The inner picture of things are different to how it appears to be on the surface. It can be like your favourite verse, poem or whatever you remember in picture form. Bringing back people to what they are really made of, in a world where only the mind is active and the heart is usually forgotten. When we meet up with people they seem to say things with their mind and not their hearts sadly.

These are some of the bare pictures that Destry has photographed. It has taken him one year to complete his work for this exhibition.

He has also used nature as a rebel for mankind. Nature is not bound to any kind of law but man has imposed laws on it. Man is not happy living within nature. He has taken part of nature and conditioned it on his own accord. Cultures have also separated man from nature. Destry's focus on the eye of man when it comes to the matter of money is another story he speaks of through his photographs.

He adds that money has become the God of our time. Just as God says, "you cannot do without me, money says it too. Some people like to follow others and some others like people to follow them.

Destry seem to be following his own heart, as he captures and brings home to our own hearts photographs of the mind of man.

The exhibition is sponsored by Hayleys Photoprint Limited, on Fuji crystal archives paper and printed at Image Services.
