Police have commenced investigations into the defacing of a name board at the foot of the stairway at Sri Pada. The Tamil and English translations of the name board hade been smudged with tar making the text illegible.
The board was recently installed by the Maskeliya Pradeshiya Sabha in all three languages - Sinhala, English and Tamil.
A tense situation is reported to have arisen between villagers and estate workers following the attempt to erase the English and Tamil translations.
Nallathanniya police said that they have commenced investigations to arrest those involved in the incident using CCTV footage which was captured in the vicinity of the area.
Meanwhile, Central Province Governor, Maithree Gunaratne said that he had instructed the police to apprehend the individuals and that he would not entertain acts of racism.
