More than 700 CID officers barred from leaving the country without permission

The names of 704 Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers have been sent to the Emigration Department to prevent them from travelling overseas without permission, Police Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

SSP Gunasekara told Times Online that the list of names had been sent by CID Director SSP W. Thilakaratna in the wake of CID Chief Police Inspector Nishantha Silva's unannounced departure to Switzerland over the weekend.

He explained that their absence would affect ongoing investigations and court proceedings regarding certain cases.

"The Immigration Department has been instructed to inform the CID Director if any officer attempts to leave the country,'' the police spokesman noted.

However, he said that officers who have obtained prior permission from the CID Director will be allowed to travel overseas.
