Torrential rains which fell for two hours left many roads in Galle town flooded last evening (21), the Galle Disaster Management Center said.
The rains, which started at about 4.00pm, continued for about two hours, leaving several roads, including Gamini Mawatha, Wackwella Road and Sangamittapura flooded. Pettigalawatta and Thalapitiya areas were also flooded after the Moda Ela overflowed.
Meanwhile, areas outside of town, including Baddegama Road, Dangedara and Didiswatta were also flooded. Many houses in these areas were affected by floodwaters. Vehicular movement along these roads was also severely affected.
Residents of Galle say that failure of authorities to regularly clean the town's drainage system has resulted in the town being flooded during such heavy rains.
Roads in Galle town were flooded in a similar manner following torrential rains experienced on November 8.
