Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected the 267th pope and appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica as the new head of the Catholic Church.
Prevost, 69, is from Chicago, Illinois. He is the first pope from the United States and will be known as Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV's first remarks to the crowds gathered at St. Peter's Basilica were "Peace be with you all." He explained this choice by saying, "This is the first greeting of the resurrected Christ, the good shepherd who has given up his life for God, and I should also like this greeting of peace to enter our hearts and our families.”
He spent ten years in Trujillo, Peru, and was appointed bishop of Chiclayo in 2014, serving there until 2023. He has been a Peruvian citizen since 2015 and holds a Peruvian passport.
Before his election, he led the Vatican office responsible for appointing bishops.
