The two Sri Lankan peackeeping personnel who lost their lives during a peackeeping operation in Mali have been posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld medal by the United Nations (UN) this week.
The medals were awarded during the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal Awarding Ceremony at the UN headquarters on May 25.
A total of 119 military, police, and civilian personnel who had lost their lives during UN field missions from January 01, 2019 to February 04, 2019 were honoured at the event.
Platoon Commander Major H. W. D. Jayawickrama of the Light Infantry Battalion of the Sri Lanka Army and Sergeant S. S. Wijekumara of the Sri Lanka Army were the fallen Sri Lankan personnel to receive the honour.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN in New York, Dr. Rohan Perera had accepted the medals on behalf of the families of the fallen Sri Lankan military personnel.
