The Puttalam District Magistrate's Court has barred protests along the Puttalam main road and the obstruction of the railway track, against the dumping of waste at the sanitary landfill site in Aruwakkalu.
The order had been issued after police had made submissions to court in a case against four persons namely M.A. Mohamed Iflal, A.W. Mohamed Ifham, M. Rizwan, and M. Ajmal who had planned the protest.
During yesterday's hearing, police had informed court of the continuous protests which have been held in this regard recently. Accordingly, court ordered that such protests should not be held and that tipper trucks carrying garbage to the landfill should not be attacked as well.
While issuing the order, the District Magistrate emphasised that although a person has the right to freedom of assembly, acts of vandalisation should not take place during such gatherings.
