The Government is keen to hold the Provincial Council (PC) elections soon and will expedite the work of the Select Committee of Parliament appointed to look into and report on selecting an electoral system for the PC s, Minister Vijitha Herath who chairs the Committee said.
The first meeting of the Committee will be held on Tuesday (17) in Parliament.
He said that the Government hopes to resolve the legal hurdles to holding the election and enable the Election Commission to conduct the poll.
The government also hopes that the system to allow Sri Lankans living overseas to vote will be in place by the time the election held so that they too can exercise their franchise.
The 11-member Parliamentary Select Committee is tasked with investigating the most suitable electoral framework for Provincial Council polls and reporting its findings, with relevant recommendations.
The members of the cross party committee Muneer Mulaffer, Sunil Watagala, Arun Hemachandra, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Mano Ganesan, Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi, Shanakiyan Rajaputhiran Rasamanickam, Samanmalee Gunasinghe, Darmapriya Wijesinghe, Chandana Sooriyaarachchi and Nizam Kariapper.
