Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa is due to call over at the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit on Sunday (October 12) to make a statement regarding his controversial statement linking an alleged narcotic trafficker to the National People's Power.
Mr Weerawansa was called to appear at the Police today, but he had sought another date to make the statement.
Addressing a press conference a few days back, Mr Weerawansa claimed that Sanath Weerasinghe, also known as ‘Beliatta Sanaa,’ who was arrested in connection with the large haul of narcotics recently seised in Seenimodara Tangalle, had supported the NPP during the election campaign.
Last week, the Tangalle Magistrate’s Court granted permission for police to detain and interrogate the suspect until October 9.
The suspect was arrested on October 1 by the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit.
The suspect is reported to be linked to the smuggling of drugs into the country via sea routes.
