Twelve persons were sentenced to death today by the Gampaha High Courts over the murder of former Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer on May 9, 2022, at Nittambuwa.
The incident occurred during the Aragalaya protests. Four more were also given a sentence.
Also, 23 individuals have been acquitted and discharged.
The Gampaha High Court Trial-at-Bar delivered its verdict regarding the murder case this morning.
The United States has told Sri Lanka that the disposition of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew is a matter for Colombo to resolve under its own laws and international obligations, while signalling it is in active talks with Sri Lanka to contain Iran’s threat to US interests.
