A sudden outbreak of illness among approximately 50 students of the Dickoya Srivani Primary School led Public Health Inspectors (PHI)s from the Ambagamuwa Medical Officer of Health Office to conduct an inspection.
The affected students of grades 1 to 5, showed symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhea yesterday (January 10).
Concerned parents admitted their children to healthcare facilities, with 25 students receiving treatment at Dickoya Base Hospital and another 25 at a private hospital in Atton City.
So far, 22 students admitted to the Dickoya Base Hospital have been discharged, while three remain under medical observation. Hospital authorities confirmed that none of the students were in critical condition.
A hospital spokesperson noted that the school had provided breakfast last morning, which included rice, ponji, lentils, and spinach. However, it was reported that even students who did not consume the meal experienced similar symptoms.
Suspecting a possible issue with the school's drinking water, the PHIs collected water samples during their visit today. Investigations are currently underway to identify the cause of the illness.
The incident has raised concerns among parents and the school community, with authorities emphasizing the need for rigorous health and safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
