The Information and Communication Technology Agency on Friday announced the Notice of Assignment (NoA) for the 2025 5G frequency auction which is expected to be held in two months.
Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, told the media that improved Internet connectivity, low-latency communication services, and new technological infrastructure will benefit key sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and apparel. He noted the potential of smart sensors in agriculture to enhance yields and minimise resource waste, as well as the use of automated systems in the apparel industry to boost quality and production capacity.
Bandula Herath, Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC), indicated that the final auction notice will be issued in 2025, followed by the auction process, expected to be completed within two months, allowing the public to access new telecommunication services thereafter. Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, Chairman of the 5G Auction Committee, confirmed a 40-day timeframe for the auction process, with pertinent information available on the TRC website, ensuring transparency throughout the process.
