Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this morning (22) to record a statement over an investigation related to his visit to the UK during his tenure. This is the second time he has been summoned to appear before the CID.
The investigation is related to the former President’s visit to London to attend a graduation ceremony of his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, during his tenure as President from September 13 to 24, 2023 and the financial allocation provided by the Presidential Secretariat.
Earlier CID informed the Court that the investigation was being carried out on the foreign trips undertaken by the former Head of State, including the London trip under the Offences Against Public Property Act.
Former senior officials who served in his office, including Sandra Perera, the private secretary and Saman Ekanayake, former Secretary, were also quizzed by the CID in recent weeks on the foreign trips undertaken by President Wickremesinghe in the past.
On August 4 and 5, both former senior officials who served under his Cabinet had to appear at the CID and record statements that lasted for several hours.
On June 11, the ex-president appeared at CID to record a statement following a complaint lodged by former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella on the import of pharmaceuticals during the previous government.
