President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will take part as chief guest at he 16th National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony to be held on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the National War Hero Cenotaph in Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte, the Government announced today.
This is contrary to previous plans that Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd) Aruna Jayasekara would be attending the event instead of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Defence Ministry said the commemoration is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the event will pay solemn tribute to the brave men and women of the Tri-Forces, Police and Civil Security Department who made the supreme sacrifice in defending the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the nation.
Over the weekend several political parties questioned as to why the President was not taking part in the commemoration events. Several social media postings too were made regarding the issue.
