The police had received information that there could be an attempt on the life of Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne alias Ganemulle Sanjeewa when he makes an appearance at the Gampaha Magistrate Court,a week before his killing in Colombo, Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya said during the press conference held today.
“We received a tip off that there could be an attempt on his life on the day he was to make an appearance at the Gampaha MC. I informed the relevant police officers in the area who spoke to the Magistrate and got permission for a virtual hearing that day,’Mr.Weerasuriya said.
However the Police had not received any such information regarding an attempt on his life during his hearing at the Colombo MC, he said.
Ganemulle Sanjeewa was shot dead earlier this week inside Court No. 5 at the Colombo MC while he was in the witness box.
The Acting IGP said that an investigation is underway to ascertain if the suspect was deliberately brought to court that day so as to expose him to the assailant.
“We are investigating several angles and this includes a probe into if there was inside information given to the assailant on the suspect’s whereabouts,” he said.
