Member of Parliament of the National Peoples Power Harini Amarasuriya and four others have filed a Fundamental Rights violation case demanding Rs one million each from the Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon and eight others for using force to disperse a protest held by women near Parliament.
The petitioners were involved in the protest near the Polduwa junction on December 4 opposing a government decision to slash the budget for womens Affairs Ministry.
Police used water cannons and dispersed the gathering.
In addition to the Acting IGP, the officers in charge of the Welikada, Thalangama and Mirihana police stations too have been cited as respondents.
