The Sri Lankan government has expressed regret over an incident of assault of a prominent travel vlogger in Weligama last year.
The Deputy Tourism Ministers office said it acknowledges the incident involving Mr. Joseph James Weber, a well-known travel vlogger and owner of The Lost Joey, who was assaulted while traveling in Weligama, Matara last year.
Mr. Weber himself recorded and shared the video of the incident on his own YouTube channel, bringing wider attention to the matter.
“Following inquiries conducted by the Sri Lanka Police, it has been confirmed that the incident occurred on February 24, 2024. The suspected individual was immediately arrested on the same day and presented before the Matara Magistrate’s Court, where legal proceedings are still ongoing,” the statement said.
“The Government of Sri Lanka deeply regrets the occurrence of this incident and remains committed to ensuring that justice prevails. Steps have already been taken to inform Mr. Weber of the government's full support in all investigations and legal processes related to the case.
Sri Lanka places a high priority on the safety and well-being of tourists, recognizing the critical role the tourism sector plays in the nation’s economic development. The government has empowered all relevant institutions to take swift legal action against any individuals or organizations whose behavior undermines the country’s reputation and the collective effort to strengthen Sri Lanka’s tourism industry,” the statement added
The Ministry statement said that the Government reaffirms its commitment to maintaining Sri Lanka as a safe and welcoming destination for travelers worldwide, ensuring that the integrity of the tourism sector remains protected.
However, the Police in a statement said they would investigate if old videos are being shared by persons or groups in a manner that bring discredit to the country.
The statement said that in this particular incident of February 14, last year, the police had acted swiftly to take action and produce the suspect in courts, but the video has been reshared giving the impression that it was a fresh incident.
The next hearing of the case has been fixed for September 11, 2025.
