A garment factory in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone that employed about 2000 persons has been closed down indefinitely from today (20).
The factory, identified as 'NEXT,' was a British investment and had been functioning since 1978, employees said.
They said the management had sent a note to staff saying they have been forced to close down as they can no longer sustain the production costs in Sri Lanka.
The factory's gates are now shut, with only security officers still present.
