The Jathika Jana Balawegaya (NPP) secured victories in most of the Local Councils across the country, in results announced so far.
The NPP has so far won 173 councils consisting of 16 Municipal Councils (MC), 24 Urban Councils (UC) and 133 Pradeshiya Sabhas (PS).
The ITAK has won two MC's, one UC and 29 PS's while the Samagi Jana Balawegaya has won one UC and five PS's
Results of 229 councils have been announced so far with 110 councils to be announced so far.
Though the NPP won most of the councils the party was not able to gain more than 50 per cent of the vote in the majority of them.
The results also showed that the NPP’s popularity had dropped compared to the last Parliamentary elections while the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna had gained.
In the northern province the ITAK appeared to have regained its popularity.
