Intelligence agencies have found politicians from several political parties have been involved with organised criminal gangs, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament today.
Minister Wijepala alleged that some politicians from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and United National Party (UNP), including former ministers, deputy ministers, Parliamentarians and current and local politicians have maintained links with 10 organised criminal gangs.
Investigations have been launched into the information uncovered by intelligence agencies, the minister said, adding that intelligence agencies have also said that this situation too has led to an increase in crimes in the country.
Several teams have been deployed to probe the matter and arrest those involved, he told the House.
