A board of inquiry has been appointed to investigate the death of a student at the University of Sabaragamuwa, reportedly linked to a ragging incident.
The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education stated that if the death is confirmed to have been caused by ragging, all parties responsible would be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.
In a statement, the Ministry noted that once the board submits its report, Sabaragamuwa University Management and the University Grants Commission will collaborate on taking the appropriate response measures.
The student, a 23-year-old attached to the Department of Engineering Technology at the University of Sabaragamuwa, attended the university's New Year celebrations last Sunday (27) and travelled home to Ihalagama, Gampola on Monday. He was found dead on Tuesday evening in a reported suicide.
The student's friends and relatives have alleged that a ragging incident, which resulted in a public stripping, had humiliated the student and led to his death.
