Under the Uma Oya Multi-Purpose Development Project, the filling of the water in Diaraba Reservoir has commenced.
Irrigation Minister Roshan Ranasinghe opened the entrance road to Diaraba Reservoir, which supplies water to the Uma Oya Multi-Purpose Development Project, and the main operation room amidst religious observances on Sunday.
Under this project, drinking water and water for agriculture will be provided to the residents of Bandarawela and water will be supplied to Alikotaara and Kudaoya reservoirs through Uma Oya and 100 small tanks in Lower Uva will be filled with water.
Fifteen thousand acres of paddy fields will be supplied with water in the Yala-Maha basin, and drinking water will also be provided to the families living in Wellawaya Kirindioya valley
The water capacity of the Handapanagala Reservoir will also be increased by the Kudo Oya Reservoir.
Through the Umaoya project, 120 megawatts of electricity capacity will be added to the national grid.
This project was started in the year 2008 and the "FARAB" agency of the Iranian government has supported the construction.
