The arrest of two suspects for heroin possession by the Mount Lavinia Crime Investigation Bureau has led police to uncover a racket involving the robbery of three-wheelers.
The two suspects were arrested yesterday from the Kahathuduwa area with 12 grams of heroin. Police Media Unit said further investigations on the suspects led police to uncover that they were part of a racket involving the robbery of three-wheelers. They would deceive three-wheeler drivers in the guise of going on a hire and then rob the three-wheeler along the way by throwing chili powder on the drivers' faces.
The wife of one of the suspects had also been involved in the racket, and she too was arrested, police added.
The two male suspects, aged 24 and 27 years, are residents of Kalawana and Kahathuduwa. The female suspect, aged 29, is also a resident of Kahathuduwa.
The group had robbed three-wheelers using the above method from Kahathuduwa, Boralesgamuwa and Moragahahena. Police have so far been able to recover four of the stolen three-wheelers and further investigations are ongoing.
