Cabinet has given approval to make additions to the draft bill for the establishment of Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of Sri Lanka (AAIBSL).
This is in keeping with the findings of the survival supervisory audit conducted in 2010 by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) which pointed out the need for an independent process to investigate aircraft accidents and related incidents.
The Cabinet in 2016 approved a proposal to establish an aircraft accident investigation bureau in Sri Lanka and the Legal Draftsman prepared a draft bill for the purpose.
However, it was found that a few more provisions should be included in this draft bill.
Hence Cabinet gave approval to a proposal by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation to make additions to the draft bill to overcome its shortcomings.
At present under the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka Act No. 34 of 2002, the Authority is entrusted with the responsibility of investigating airline accidents and related incidents within the territory of Sri Lanka.
