Approval granted to draft Bill to repeal Presidents Entitlements Act

The draft Bill to repeal the existing Presidents Entitlement Act of 1986 will be presented to Parliament shortly, Cabinet Spokesman Dr Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

He told the weekly cabinet news conference that approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted at their meeting held on 16.06.2025 to prepare a draft bill to repeal the existing Presidents Entitlements Act No. 4 of 1986 so that the special entitlements provided to former Presidents and their families will be cancelled.

The initial proposal was mentioned in the government’s policy declaration “Pohosath Ratak – Lassana Jeewithayak” (A Rich Country – A Blissful Life).

Accordingly, the Legal Draftsman has drafted the bill of Presidents Entitlements (Repeal) Act and the clearance from the Attorney General has been given .

He said therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval for the proposal by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to publish the draft bill in the government gazette notification and, submit it to the Parliament for its concurrence.
