Thousands of people have already arrived in Kandy in view of the special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa due to open on Friday evening.
Our correspondent said that some of them arrived by Wednesday midnight to join the queue anticipating large numbers to arrive in the next few days.
The special exposition is being held after 16 years and is scheduled to hold for a period of 10 days, from April 18-27, 2025.
Police have deployed 10,000 officers to carry out security checks on the public, manage traffic as well as reduce congestion.
Sri Lanka Police has launched a special traffic plan for Kandy from today onwards (17 Apr), in view of the special exposition.
Additional train and bus services have been arranged to provide transport for those arriving in Kandy.
At least 50 schools within Kandy city and suburbs have been closed between April 21 and 25 inorder to accommodate additional police and security personnel as well and any elderly or disabled persons who may need accommodation.
Director Education for the Central Province Nihal Alahakoon said if a decision is taken to extend the exposition these schools will be further closed down.
All liquor shops and beef stalls will be closed from April 18 to 27.
Meanwhile the Kandy Municipal Council has directed that all Dansel operating in the next few days in Kandy would have to register with the KMC.
