opening the tissue culture laboratory
Equipped with the latest technological innovations, the new tissue culture laboratory has been established with the goal of producing high-quality, disease-free planting materials for both local and export markets. The facility enables large-scale plant propagation under sterile, controlled conditions, ensuring uniformity, quality, and rapid multiplication of elite plant varieties. Speaking at the opening, the Managing Director of Lotus Group D. A. M. Janith Abeykoon stated: “This establishment reflects our long-term vision to integrate biotechnology into sustainable agriculture. Through this lab, we are not only supporting farmers and exporters but also paving the way for advanced research in new plant variants and modern cultivation techniques.” The laboratory is currently engaged in the tissue culture production of fruit crops such as banana and pineapple, flower crops including orchids and vinca, and commercially valuable species like agarwood and aloe vera. Further research focuses on expanding the plant portfolio, developing new genetic lines, and exploring novel methods to improve yield and quality for export markets. With the launch of this export-based tissue culture facility, Lotus Group continues to strengthen its role as a leader in Sri Lanka’s Agri-tech sector, combining innovation, sustainability, and scientific excellence to shape the future of agriculture.
