Fair demand at Colombo Tea Auction

Business

There was fair demand at this week’s Colombo Tea Auction where there was a total offering of 5.4 million kg of which Ex-Estate offerings comprised 0.75 million kg.

In the Ex-Estate catalogue, Best Western BOP’s – a few select invoices were firm and up to Rs.20 per kg dearer, whilst the others were irregular mostly following quality. Corresponding BOPF’s too had a few select invoices which were firm and dearer, whilst the others declined by Rs.20 -40 per kg.

In the Below Best category, a few select BOP invoices appreciated by Rs.20 per kg, whilst the others were irregular and lower by a similar margin.

Udapussellawa BOP’s declined by Rs.50 per kg. Uva BOP’s declined by upto Rs.50 per kg. High and Mid Grown CTC teas – BP1s had hardly any offerings.

There was less activity from shippers to the UK and the continent. There was improved though selective interest from shippers to South Africa whilst shippers to Japan and China continued to maintain market activity. Shippers to the CIS and Middle East bid on a wider cross-section of the teas. (SD)
