Susanthika, Darsha in 200m clash

SusanthikaSusanthika Jayasinghe will be the first Sri Lankan athlete to come under the starters' orders in the women's 200 metres together with Damayanthi Darsha at the World championships in Seville, Spain from August 20 to 30.

Susanthika got the better of Damayanthi when they last met on foreign soil. Sugath Tillekaratne, Chinthaka de Soyza and hurdlers Jaysekera and Sriyani Kulawansa Fonseka will be the other participants.

Meanwhile, at Seville it will be time again to elect the new Council for the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). It is time to take stock again of the calibre of our members who served the past Council, the magazine put out by the IAAF., states in its front page. It is time again to see if they will be standing again for the next elections. The power is with the voter. The voter has to be discerning. He should not be impressed by promises but by the ability of the candidate to work for athletics in his Federation, his area and the IAAF.

Eight (8) candidates have been nominated by their Federations in Asia. Not all eight will make it to the Council. Friends and members of Asia will have to exercise their vote wisely to choose the right person for the right job and who will be useful and who will work for the good of atletics in the World.

It is not necessary to mention that there will be some candidates going for prestige and for their own purposes. You can recognise them.

As the saying goes "You can fool some people some of the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time". So vote wisely, the magazine concludes in its front page message.

Rover pinpoints…

Out of turn

An umpire from the hills is going on praising certain cricket board officials to the hilt, whilst condemning others for expected favours. He is also criticising journalists for writing favourably about Royal / S. Thomas' and not Ananda /Nalanda.

Leaking info

The Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) is noted for leaking information to a certain newspaper and depriving others of vital information. Reason: This particular newspaper always writes favourably about officials.

Failed but rewarded

News from the hills is that a brother of a Cricket Board Official lost his position by three votes to a better qualified person. But alas Rover learns that this loser was promoted to a position even better than the victor with an even better clout.

Money missing?

Money amounting to sponsorship of 7.5 million given for outstation development programme has been missing. One wonders what had happened to this money and the officials also cannot lay their hands on the particular files.

Vanishing trick

An athlete who had been breaking record after record and getting his name into the Guinness Book has done the vanishing trick. Rover learns a sponsorship of three and half lakhs was donated to this athlete from a ministry to achieve another record overseas. It's nearly two months now and no news has reached Sri Lanka about this person nor his effort.
