Amila's sporty declaration nearly pays off dividends

By Saif Izzadeen

President's College captain Amila Gunawardena's sporty declaration nearly brought them victory against Mahanama yesterday as they were made to struggle at 164 for 6 at close of play.

The second annual big match between these two schools ended in a draw at the R.Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, not before giving some exciting moments.

Mahanama set with a victory target of 205 in 53 overs with an asking rate of 3.6 per over got their innings to the worst possible start as they were made to reel at four wickets down for eight runs.

This was due to some fiery fast bowling by P.Jayawickrema who had all Mahanama batsmen at sea in a devastating opening spell which fetched him three of the first four wickets to fall.

When it seemed that fast bowler Jayawickrema will run through the Kollupitiya schools innings dogged batting by P.Jinasena, Pubudu Sathyapala, D.Ratnayake and D.Bandara took their side safely to a draw.

When Pubudu Satyapala joined no.3 batsman P.Jinasena all seemed gloomy for Mahanama as they were wobbling at 8 for 4 and in danger of losing the match.

However unruffled by this, the fifth wicket pair of Sathyapala and Jinasena frustrated the Rajagiriya school's bowling attack and were associated in a partnership of 95 runs which came almost in two hours batting.

Pubudu Sathyapala and P.Jinasena's partnership of 95 runs took the Mahanama score from a wobbly 8 for 4 to 103 for 4. At this stage P.Caldera got the all important breakthrough by having Satyapala bowled for a well made 40 and Mahanama were 103 for 5

Then D.Ratnayake joined P.Jinasena and the sixth wicket pair added 24 runs and with the score at 127 for 5 Parneeth Jayasundara who had taken 91 wickets for the season caught Jinasena plumb in front after he missed a straight delivery.

With the score at 127 for 6 Ratnayake was joined by Bandara and the seventh wicket pair put on an unbroken fighting 37 run partnership which saw them to 164 for 6 at which stage the stumps were drawn.

Early in the day Mahanama were bowled out for 157, after starting from their overnight score of 101 for 8. This was in reply to President's first innings score of 243

President's batting in their second turn with a lead of 86 runs went for quick runs and made 118 for the loss of seven wickets and declared their innings 10 minutes after lunch.

This set Mahanama 205 to win in 53 overs in nearly one and half sessions but the Kollupitiya school never seemed to go for that target and were 164 for 6 at the close.

Can South Africa beat the rain?

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday (Reuters) - Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis, unbeaten by New Zealand's bowlers, were defeated by the country's weather when just 40 balls were possible on the third day of the second test at Lancaster Park on Saturday.

South Africa's young batting stars advanced their second wicket partnership from its overnight 102 to 120 before the grey, clinging drizzle that prevented play from starting until 3.15 p.m. (0215 GMT) returned and drove the players from the field after just 29 minutes.

Gibbs, who resumed on 101 not out from 286 balls in six hours and 52 minutes, immediately tried to raise the tempo in the short time available adding two boundaries to reach 113 with a total of 13 fours and one six.

Kallis, who resumed on 53, square drove Vettori through point and added a single to move his score onto 58.

Having bowled their hosts out for 168 on the first day, South Africa's lead stands at 79 runs with nine wickets in hand.

An extra hour will be added to the fourth and fifth days play in an attempt to make up lost time although a total of seven hours and 35 minutes, equating to 116 overs, has been lost already.

"There are still around 210 overs left in the match and, although it's been badly frustrating, we believe there's still enough time left in the match to produce a result," Hansie Cronje said when play was finally abandoned at 4.55 p.m.

South African coach Bob Woolmer confirmed that Allan Donald, who left the field prematurely on the first day, would almost certainly not bowl again in the match.

Rover Pinpoints
Kandy hotel left high and dry

Food and what not was ordered by a prominent figure from a popular sports controlling body for a function in Kandy on the promise that the bill would be settled in no time. Rover understands that this bill is still pending!

On an earlier occasion too this same hotel was played out as the bill for a special function was not settled. Rover is informed that the 'same prominent figure from a popular sports controlling body' was involved in the earlier incident too.

Return mobile phones

A strict order has been sent out by the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka to return all mobile phones provided to members who should treat this as a general requirement before the annual general meeting fixed for Sunday March 28.

Another record indeed.

The minutes of the Exco meetings of the Cricket Board numbering six were proposed and seconded all on one day, February 12, and more, only one person was involved in doing so.

Believe it or not?

Rs 400 million has been set aside for the new cricket grounds which is to be set up in Dambulla on a 62-acre plot of land. The project will be completed in four stages.

Rover learns that the grounds will be better equipped than the R. Premadasa International Stadium.

Rs. 190 million is to be budgeted for Stage 1 with the hope of having it ready for the mini World Cup in January 2000.

Eight bowlers to be screened.

The Cricket Board had identified eight bowlers with suspect action. Rs 60,000/- is needed to screen their suspect actions through video.

Rover scores again

The Treasurer of the Cricket Board had suggested that Rs 928,000/- which has been outstanding for a period of two years be written off as no documents could be traced for recovery.

This novel championship of six rounds will be sponsored by six motor sports promoters and is certain to havea large spectator turnout.

Motor sports lovers will be given the opportunity to witness Karting stalwarts like Romani de Silva, Yoga Perera, Aravinda Premadasa, Sheran and Ranjitha Cooke.
