Is he the man?

Aman who has been judged by the country's highest judiciary, the Supreme Court, as having violated human rights, wants to be SriLanka's Deputy High Commissioner in London.

Pushing the case strongly for retired Inspector General of Police, W.B. Rajaguru, is his former boss, Deputy Defence Minister, General Anuruddha Ratwatte.

Whether he would be accepted by the Court of St. James is not yet known. There is also another hurdle to clear - the High Posts Committee in Parliament before the former cop can turn diplomat.

A close eye on politicos

T.V. Sumanasekera, now the Additional Director of the Directorate of Internal Intelligence (DII),insiders say, has been given some additional responsibility.

The former DIG (CID) who is now retired, they say, will now keep a close eye on politicos and scribes, what they say and what they do. That is among other things.

A team from the CID has been hand picked by Mr Sumanasekera and seconded for service at the DII. Needless to say one has to be more careful when they say hi or hello.

To man bunkers or not

Non militant Tamil groups in the Wanni say they are now considering a request by the security forces high command to man bunkers in the defence lines.

They say the proposal includes remuneration and other perks but a decision is yet to be made.

They don't fall from the air

The talk in London last week was the arrival there of a newly rich man, one who became a millionaire upon retirement. He was wining and dining all who mattered. The mission ? Well, to have his sibling admitted to a renowned higher educational institution there.

But for many paupers, there is no such luck. They don't fall from the air !!

A French connection

It's a French connection of sorts. French President Jacques Chirac has sent a team of his top snoopers to teach their local counter parts in Sri Lanka.

No doubt they will teach some secrets. Not the kind of stuff one sees in the Pink Panther series.

Prabhakaran's peace moves

If he held out an olive branch during the heroes week address, LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, had also slipped in three hard core women suicide cadres into the City.

Intelligence sources say their targets include VVIPs, senior security forces and Police officials. A red alert has gone out to security establishments in the City.

Tiger Tapping

The LTTE is also now resorting to telephone tapping.

Reports from the Wanni say Tiger Reconnaissance cadres have been asked to monitor telephone conversations of military officials. A recce cadre who tried to interfere with telephone lines in the Wanni was shot dead recently.
