Colonial blends

By Yvonne Gulamhusein

A fashion show exhibits a mixture of the Lankan and the British

A blend of UK designs together with a selection of clothing made in Sri Lanka for the British and European markets was the focus of a fashion show at the Oberoi last week, in connection with the British Trade Fair presented by Senaka de Silva. The show highlighted specially produced items by leading designers and manufacturers which were all export-oriented.

fashion showOpening the show was Slimline's lingerie in luxury fabrics. Courtalds range included a lot of Ocelot prints in the sleepwear section and men's sportwear. Hirdramani contributed pretty Spring floral designed fashion fabrics, for their section.

Steuarts Lanka had beautiful dress wear fabrics from velvet-chiffon and one which specially caught my eye was printed and shaded in orange flame.

Barefoot's hand-woven exquisite choice selection was their white Collection, melting into shades of dark burgundy.

Ending this one hour show was the Senaka de Silva Collection designed for Steuarts Lanka, using a lot of trendy stretch fabrics in velvet, brocade, satin and lace.

Trade Minister Kingsley Wickremaratne and his wife were Chief Guests. Ramzi Rahaman did the elegant hairstyles and Senaka the models' makeup.

You can get away from the incessant interruptions which are so much a part of the metropolis to do those things you never really get to do.

While the invigorating air and the calm of the surrounding mountains provide the essential ingredients for rest, the wide variety of activities available at the Kotmale Holiday Resort cater to the recreational needs of the visitor.

The ideal place to host a conference, train a team, organize a youth camp or just go to get the worn out batteries charged, is Kotmale Holiday Resort.

The individual cottages situated a short distance away from the main building maintain a certain independence which ensures privacy whether alone or in a group.

The Resort, managed by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation is equipped with a Conference Room with a capacity to accommodate 75 persons and necessary amenities.

Raising one's head above the sparkling blue waters of the swimming pool, one sees varying shades of green, the encircling mountain range in the distance and the waters of the Kotmale reservoir as they shimmer in the sunlight. The variety of leisure activities on offer include tennis, squash, badminton, table tennis, netball, and volleyball. The floodlit courts allow sports enthusiasts to indulge themselves no matter what time of the day.

The Bar Lounge with its 'Scandinavian Chairs' invites you to be as lazy as you wish for as long as you wish, while the dance floor is spacious and equipped to make anyone want to dance their cares away.

The Chairman of the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, conceptualises the Resort as a 'cure hotel'.

And the decor which is all furbished in shades of blue provides a soothing atmosphere and augments the tranquillity of the place. Even a Health Menu is at hand for those who wish to try something different.
