A new series on what's up on the Indian scene

Of Bombayites, Delhiites and Keralites

By Bandula Jayasekara In New Delhi

India has always fasci nated me. At times I wonder why? But I end up deciding not to wonder and it has helped. I continue to walk down fascination street. Over the years I have travelled to many places in India even to the smallest state Diu with a population of 40,000.

Visited the pub city Bangalore, attended Miss India contests, magazine launches, massage parties with some of Bombay's you know whos (but it is not what you think) drain parties.

I have spent hours with slum dwellers, fought with taxi drivers and discussed politics pretending to be a strong member of the BJP's Sri Lanka branch. Enjoyed the street food, Kulfi Ice creams, and never carried bottled water. Once I sat outside Brindawan for more than six hours but failed to attain nirvana.

India is not a country but a continent. But I have had no problems with Bombayites, Delhiites, Keralites or any ites. They all are the same to me - Indians.

Most of my friends have complained against Delhiites. I still can't understand why. In fact I like Delhi.

My favourite road is Janpath Road. The AirLanka office is down Janpath. One can get anything and everything down Janpath Road, banks, money changers, pharmacies, electronic shops, books and textiles. I always end up buying a few magazines and short sleeved Kurtas from Janpath. I never bargain because I cannot. But the Kurtas are cheap, only 50/-.

The taki wallahs and auto wallahs try to stop you at every point. But they have always failed to stop me because I enjoy my Delhi street walk. This is the beginning of the Delhi street walk.

Stop over : one of the pubs in India held a kissing competition recently and the competitors had to kiss a mannequin called Miss Mischief.

The red light glows from the kissometer and the most passionate kisser gets 15 points.

Why India, why Mannequins with so many beauties?
